An interesting article from the Huffington Post offers some good insight on what is in store for social media, and identifies a few important trends for businesses to watch as we move into 2013.

Amy Jo Martin explains that with social media comes a new way for people to get the basic needs from a company in an easier fashion. Things like customer service being transformed into a social media platform allows social media users to take care of their product needs through a way that they are already familiar with. The article explains. “by providing memorable social media customer service, companies not only create deeper connections with consumers, but they glean valuable insights on how to improve their products or services.” Most of these types of information are able to be obtained on an instant basis through social media, which replaces costly research study.

The article makes other points in how social media will shape up in 2013, explaining that social media is “in the hands of the people” using examples of facebook and instagram changing policies and features to accommodate users. The article also discusses how social media is an equal opportunity advertising advantage to companies, allowing small businesses to begin somewhere.

 

Social media is constantly changing, and I believe with social media becoming an increasingly important part of everyday life, it is key for businesses to look at trends like these. Not only will it help them maintain their customer base, but also have a competitive edge over other businesses who do not pay attention to social media trends.
